The 10 Pound Throwdown Challenge started in response to the 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment, which indicated that 67% of York County residents and 74% of Adams County residents are overweight or obese. This striking statistic prompted WellSpan Health to take action! Community Health & Wellness, a department within WellSpan Health, quickly became interested in offering a creative and innovative way to engage the community in a weight loss challenge. With assistance and expertise from the very talented eHealth and Public Relations & Marketing departments at WellSpan, the 10 Pound Throwdown website was established.
The first 10 Pound Throwdown Challenge was offered in February 2013 and featured weekly themes related to healthy eating and physical activity as well as a weight tracker. In its first year, over 1,600 participants lost approximately 5,836 pounds. Now in its fifth year, the 10 Pound Throwdown continues to grow year after year. We have expanded our reach and promotion efforts, and continue to seek interactive ways to keep participants excited about the Challenge. In 2016, a record 3,727 participants lost over 11,000 pounds by making small steps toward big changes in their health.
We hope this site guides you in making healthy behavior changes- we want you to reach your goals! Remember, small steps lead to big changes.
